From the sun-drenched lands of Tunisia come natural beauty products that combine traditional knowledge, sustainability, and innovation, reflecting the quality and creativity of the country’s cosmetic industry. Increasingly appreciated and in demand across Europe, North America, and Asia, these products owe their international success to an exceptional ingredient, celebrated for its remarkable antioxidant, regenerative, and anti-aging properties: prickly pear seed oil, now considered one of the most valuable natural actives in the global “clean beauty” landscape.

Tunisia’s cosmetic sector: growth, innovation, and global reach

Over the past decade, Tunisia’s cosmetic industry has evolved from the production of natural ingredients to the formulation of sophisticated cosmetic products. Anchored in rich biodiversity, traditional botanical knowledge, and modern research, the country is now recognized as a supplier of high-quality natural ingredients and finished cosmetic products.

The Tunisian market has strategically responded to the global surge in demand for certified organic and ingredient-transparent beauty products, expanding exports primarily to Europe, North America, and Asia. Investments in certified production, quality infrastructure, and supply chain development have positioned Tunisia as a regional hub for natural cosmetics, attracting international buyers and premium brands seeking authentic, traceable ingredients.

Within this context, six Tunisian companies, supported by the PAMPAT project, exemplify the sector’s excellence. These companies combine traditional expertise with scientific innovation to transform local ingredients—particularly prickly pear seed oil—into premium cosmetic products recognized on international markets. Their participation in the national pavilion showcases how Tunisia is building a structured and sustainable supply chain, where quality, tradition, and innovation converge.

From nature to global beauty: prickly pear seed oil

At the heart of this transformation is prickly pear seed oil, extracted from Opuntia ficus-indica, widely cultivated in the country’s arid and semi-arid regions. This oil has become the hallmark ingredient of Tunisian cosmetics, celebrated for its potent antioxidant, anti-aging, and regenerative properties.

The production process is meticulous and resource-intensive: approximately 30 kg of seeds, obtained from nearly one ton of fruit, are needed to yield just one liter of cold-pressed oil, preserving its full biological integrity. Rich in vitamin E, essential fatty acids (Omega 6 and 9), and sterols, the oil supports skin barrier regeneration, improves elasticity, and protects against oxidative stress. Clinical studies have confirmed its efficacy within just four weeks, showing visible wrinkle reduction, improved skin firmness, and a decrease in dark circles and pigmentation spots.

Tunisia has established itself as a global pioneer in the structured valorization of prickly pear seed oil, thanks to strict standards for quality, traceability, and safety. Organic certifications, compliance with ISO 22716 Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), and internationally recognized technical standards ensure that the ingredient meets the highest global benchmarks. These measures have transformed a local tradition into a structured and competitive cosmetic supply chain, capable of supplying international markets with premium natural actives.

Beyond its cosmetic value, the sector has a significant socio-economic impact, generating employment in rural areas, promoting sustainable land use, and integrating local farmers into international value chains. Prickly pear seed oil is thus not only a symbol of Tunisian excellence but also a driver of sustainable innovation in the cosmetic industry.

Experiences and encounters at the Tunisia pavilion

The national pavilion, organized by CEPEX with the support of the PAMPAT project implemented by UNIDO and financed by SECO, will offer visitors an immersive experience into Tunisia’s cosmetic ecosystem. Attendees will have the opportunity to explore products, production processes, and certifications that guarantee quality, safety, and authenticity, while gaining insight into how local natural resources are transformed into high-value cosmetic solutions.

On 27 March 2026, targeted meetings will be held with the participating companies, during which they will present their latest innovations, internationalization strategies, and market prospects in natural cosmetics.
